Legal framework for seasteads: For seasteading to be sustainable, three things are needed:
A flag: This provides an anchoring to a nationality and offers legal protections (1:50).
Insurance: Essential for managing the high costs associated with vessels (2:06).
Classification of the vessel: A new classification for these types of vessels is required, different from traditional fishing boats or cruise ships (2:18). This classification would be defined by a body of engineers (2:38).
Feasibility and self-sufficiency: Seasteads can be self-sufficient through:
Electricity: Solar power and batteries can provide ample electricity (4:58).
Freshwater: Desalination plants can produce enough water for a family, running purely on solar power (5:15).
Food: Designing vessels to mimic coral reefs can attract an abundance of fish, providing a food source (5:28). It's also possible to have livestock like goats on board (6:18).
Current status and future prospects: The Seasteading Institute is actively working on defining the classification for these vessels, and several companies are already building "seasteads" that can be purchased for around $150,000-$200,000 for smaller editions (3:17).
