Leviticus 24.17-21 establishes the "Eye for an Eye" principle, also known as Lex Talionis. This idea is first mentioned in Exodus 21.23-25 and further clarified in Deuteronomy 19.15-21. But Jesus says “turn the other cheek” in Matthew 5.38-48; so which is it? Should we follow Moses when he instructs to take “eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, burn for burn, wound for wound, and bruise for bruise?” - Ex 21.23-25. Or should we listen to Jesus when he says, “If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also” (Mat 5.39).
