Kratos is a father again. As mentor and protector to Atreus, a son determined to earn his respect, he is forced to deal with and control the rage that has long defined him while out in a very dangerous world with his son.

From the marble and columns of ornate Olympus to the gritty forests, mountains and caves of pre-Viking Norse lore, this is a distinctly new realm with its own pantheon of creatures, monsters and gods.

Chapter 9 - The Sickness (Part 2):

Freya reveals that Atreus’s illness comes from the contradiction between his godhood and his belief that he is mortal, and only a heart from the Bridge Keeper in Helheim can save him. Kratos reluctantly leaves Atreus in Freya’s care and travels alone, returning to his cabin to retrieve the Blades of Chaos, fully acknowledging the past he has tried to erase. With the Blades granting him power over Helheim’s cold, Kratos fights through frozen nightmares, towering Hel-Walkers, and illusions meant to torment him, including echoes of Zeus and his own former life. He defeats the Bridge Keeper in a brutal, multi-phase battle and secures the Helheim heart, pushing himself through collapsing structures and icy storms to escape the realm. Kratos returns to Freya, who uses the heart to save Atreus — but the boy awakens altered, now fully aware of his divine nature and the power that comes with it.

Chapter 10 - The Black Rune:

With Atreus recovering — and emboldened by the revelation that he is a god — Kratos, Atreus, and Mimir return to Tyr’s Vault to retrieve the Black Rune, a key component needed to reach Jötunheim. Inside the vault, Kratos and Atreus navigate deadly traps, draugr ambushes, and shifting floor puzzles, all while Atreus grows increasingly reckless and dismissive of Kratos’s guidance. Their intrusion triggers a powerful explosion that launches the temple skyward, and the group fends off Hel-Walkers as the entire structure tilts and collapses around them. After securing the Black Rune, Atreus’s arrogance peaks when he kills Modi outright during a confrontation, shocking Kratos and pushing the father-son conflict to its breaking point. The chapter closes with the group returning to Tyr’s Temple, the tension between Kratos and Atreus heavier than ever despite the progress toward Jötunheim.
