On December 1, 2025, at approximately 6:08 p.m., Port St. Lucie Police officers responded to a disturbance in the 11000 block of SW Lake Park Drive in the Tradition community.

Upon arrival, officers were immediately confronted by 32-year-old Frankie Salvatore Riccio, armed with an AK-47-style rifle. Despite repeated commands to drop the weapon, Riccio opened fire, striking 27-year veteran Sergeant Erik LeVasseur twice in the face.

Sergeant LeVasseur was transported to HCA Florida Lawnwood Medical Center where he underwent multiple surgeries. He remains in critical condition in a medically induced coma. Shrapnel lodged in his retina requires specialized removal at another trauma center.

Officers returned fire, striking Riccio, who was pronounced deceased at the scene.
