Super C No-Death Playthrough (Actual NES Capture)

This is a capture of me playing through Super C on the NES. This is not an emulator. This footage was captured directly from my front-loading NES using a real Super C cartridge.

Following up on my Contra playthrough, here’s the direct sequel: Super C. I first played this game (along with NES Contra) back around 1998 when my new middle-aged neighbor lent me both of his games. Although I was able to use the Konami code when I first played Contra, I wasn’t aware of any codes for Super C, so I had to spend a week memorizing the game the old-fashioned way.

I later picked up complete copies of both Contra and Super C in 2013, shortly after starting my Youtube channel, but I have only now gotten around to recording playthroughs of both games.

To me, Super C is a noticeable improvement over Contra, even though it’s so similar. The level design is better, the new top-view stages are more fun than the prior tunnel stages, and there seems to be a greater variety of enemies as well. It’s actually surprising seeing how much influence this game had on the later Contra titles.

Interestingly, when my neighbor let me borrow his copy of Super C back around 1998, he told me that Konami had shortened the Super Contra title (from the arcade) to avoid association with the Iran-Contra affair during that era. I’d say that’s highly plausible, despite the excuses that Konami came up with for the strange new name.

This is an excellent NES game with a catchy soundtrack, so enjoy the footage.

Recorded with the Hauppauge HD PVR and a composite connection at 60 frames per second. I used a Toshiba model D-R550 DVD Recorder to upconvert the NES's native 240p signal to 480i so that the Hauppauge could capture the console's audio/video signal.

I'm using a standard NES controller.
