Rosemead, CA - A mental distress call ended with deputies fatally shooting an armed man in the San Gabriel Valley on Wednesday night, authorities said.

The incident began around 5 p.m. with the call reporting a person suffering from a mental illness on the 3000 block of Sullivan Avenue near Garvey Avenue in Rosemead, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department spokesperson Daniel Vizcara said.

Arriving deputies learned that the person was making threats to harm himself, his family members, and deputy personnel, Vizcara said.

A mental evaluation team and crisis negotiators were called in and discovered that the man was armed with a high-profile rifle.

Around 11:30 p.m., the man exited the house with the rifle, leading deputies to open fire.

The unidentified man was struck by the gunfire and pronounced dead at the scene.

Vizcara said that two people, an elderly man and a juvenile, were found unharmed inside the home. They are family members of the suspect, but no further details on their relationships were provided.
