“Fabulous Places” was recorded by Sammy Davis Jr. in 1962 and released on This Is Sammy Davis during his early Reprise Records period, shortly after Frank Sinatra helped bring him to the label and as Davis was firmly established as a major Rat Pack figure in Las Vegas.
By this time Davis had already scored major hits such as “What Kind of Fool Am I?”, “The Candy Man,” and “That Old Black Magic,” and appeared in high-profile films including Ocean’s 11 and Sergeants 3 alongside Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin.
The album was produced with full studio orchestra in Reprise’s polished swing style, and the track itself is structured as spoken narration over tight orchestration rather than traditional singing.
By name-checking Paris, London, Rome, Monte Carlo, Tokyo, Bangkok, and Las Vegas, the piece reflects both the jet-age moment and the real offstage life Davis shared with Sinatra and Dean Martin, performing at the Sands Hotel as the Pack dominated Vegas lounge culture.
