Big Bird greets the viewers, and says that he is going to a place called Camp Echo Rock! The entire cast shows up to sing "Big Bird's Going to Camp."

It's the first morning at Camp Echo Rock and Aunt Mae heralds it by (badly) playing “The Reveille” on the bugle to wake everyone up. Big Bird wakes from his makeshift nest and briefly forgets that he's not on Sesame Street anymore and he, Mickey, and the kids get up on time for breakfast... except for Rusty, who would rather sleep. Mickey tries to convince Rusty to get out of bed, but Rusty isn't used to cabin life yet and requests he get his food from a restaurant instead. He's finally convinced to get up when Mickey lists all the delicious offerings they have.

Everybody at Camp Echo Rock Cabin 10 is busy cleaning up the place while Aunt Mae does her special inspections to make sure everything is neat and in order. Big Bird and the kids fix their beds (and nest) neatly, but Rusty is the only one who hasn't done so. Mickey gets the feeling that Rusty doesn't know how to make his bed and he and the group stall Aunt Mae long enough to get Rusty's bed looking the same as everybody else's. Aunt Mae finally conducts her inspection of Cabin 10 and finds it very well done... especially Rusty's bed.

Big Bird welcomes the viewers, and says the Camp Echo Rock gang will be going on a hike. Aunt Mae first makes sure that Big Bird and the kids have packed everything they'll need for the overnight trip on the mountain; when asked about food, Big Bird indicates that Radar has packed the relish in his tiny knapsack. Aunt Mae shows the group one of the arrows they'll be following that leads to the end of their trail, and everyone starts their trek!

Today, Bob is giving music lessons to his friends on Sesame Street, first briefly checking up on Gordon's flute playing before going to his apartment. As Gordon practices, Oscar, Grundgetta, and a couple of other Grouches arrive to enjoy the "concert," cheering whenever Gordon hits some sour notes.

Big Bird, Bob, Telly and David hear an announcement on the radio at Hooper's Store about a water shortage. The announcer (Martin P. Robinson) advises listeners against filling swimming pools, washing cars, taking long showers, and leaving the water running while brushing teeth. David promptly turns the water off in a nearby sink.
