The winds of Yamashiro carried me west from Shoryuji Castle, to a place the locals called Eagles Nest. The climb itself was reward enough—the world spread below me in waves of green and gold, the horizon fading into mist. Yet beauty has a way of hiding challenge, and as I descended along a narrow trail, I came upon a carved sign, old and worn: Path of the Brave. I smiled at the words. “Another trial,” I thought. “Another test for those who believe courage should be proven.” I stepped forward, half confident, half curious—and perhaps, more foolish than brave.

At first, it was a climb—a tree, a rope, the sharp breath of air beneath my feet. But soon the path twisted into madness. Broken branches became footholds. Cliff edges demanded leaps I had no right to make. Each grasp burned my palms; each ledge tore at my fingers. Blood streaked the stone as I swung from rope to rope, clinging to life by splinters and instinct. Below me, the world waited to swallow my body whole if I slipped. My father and Auntie Matsu trained me for endurance, for discipline, but nothing had prepared me for this dance between courage and fear.

When I reached the summit, I found my prize—Hibiki’s Gear. It shimmered faintly in the mountain light, woven from something finer than steel, lighter than silk. The moment I donned it, I felt my senses sharpen—my vision clearer, my balance surer, my movements effortless. Perhaps it was the material... or perhaps it was something else. A blessing for those who endure. A reward for those who face fear and keep moving forward.

Was it worth the pain? The blood? The trembling hands? Yes. But I learned something more valuable than the armor itself. Bravery and foolishness often walk the same road—the difference lies only in thought and intent. The brave act with understanding. The foolish, without it. May I always have the wisdom to know which one I am when I leap.
