Foreigner, the British-American rock band formed in New York City in 1976 by veteran guitarist Mick Jones, ex-King Crimson member Ian McDonald, and American vocalist Lou Gramm (along with Dennis Elliott, Al Greenwood, and Ed Gagliardi), quickly rose to fame with their self-titled debut album in 1977, the first of four consecutive 5× platinum releases in the US, featuring Top 10 hits like “Feels Like the First Time” and “Cold as Ice.” Their signature sound—built on Jones’ songwriting, Gramm’s powerful vocals, and a tight rhythm section—delivered sly lyrics and arena-ready hooks, with follow-ups Double Vision (1978) hitting No. 3 with “Hot Blooded,” Head Games (1979) reaching No. 5, and the chart-topping 4 (1981) spawning massive singles “Urgent,” “Waiting for a Girl Like You,” and “Juke Box Hero.” After a hiatus, they embraced a new image and sound on Agent Provocateur (1984), scoring the global No. 1 ballad “I Want to Know What Love Is,” followed by Inside Information (1987) and later albums like Unusual Heat (1991 with Johnny Edwards on vocals), Mr. Moonlight (1994 with Gramm back), and Can’t Slow Down (2009). Frontman Lou Gramm, born Louis Grammatico in Rochester, New York in 1950, began with Black Sheep before joining Foreigner, co-writing most of their hits and releasing acclaimed solo albums Ready or Not (1987) and Long Hard Look (1989), including “Midnight Blue” and “Just Between You and Me.” Over their career, Foreigner has sold more than 80 million records, charted 13 Top 40 hits, and remains a popular live act, with Gramm’s contributions defining their classic era.
