The Circle by W. Somerset Maugham

a young woman named Elizabeth is planning to leave her husband, Arnold, for his best friend, Teddie. Arnold's mother, Lady Kitty, had done the exact same thing thirty years prior, leaving her husband, Clive, to run off with Lord Porteous. The play begins with the arrival of the now-elderly Lady Kitty and Lord Porteous for a visit, bringing the past crashing into the present. Elizabeth believes that her love with Teddie is different and that she can find happiness, unlike her mother-in-law. However, as the play unfolds, the younger generation sees the reality of Kitty and Porteous's life: a long and often-bitter relationship, marked by disappointment and the fading of their initial passion. Through witty and often cynical dialogue, Maugham's play explores the cyclical nature of human behavior, love, and the disillusionment that often comes with pursuing one's desires. The central question becomes whether Elizabeth will break the "circle" of her family's past or repeat the same mistakes.
