THE SIN OF PROPERTY TAX EXPLAINED
With two topics, I’ll start with one crime and go on to another.

I just paid another year’s property tax on my home. Highway robbery that never ends! In my county, a home valued at $500,000 [not a lot of home really] is taxed about $3,000 a year where I live. That’s $250 a month! Excuse me? When bought 9 years ago this home valued at $159,000 and taxes were a little less than $100 bucks a month. Back then that seemed a little stiff, but that was then … and this, unfortunately, is now. $100 dollars has inflated to $250!

The average home in our county is appraised at $610,000 and I don’t even want to know what those poor bastards are paying in property tax!

1. Let’s look at property tax in the United States. Tax assessment is a crime almost exclusively committed on the county level. With over 3,000 counties in America this means there are more than 3,000 agencies ready, willing and able to take away people’s homes, dreams, and futures.

Thousands of these county-sanctioned crimes are happening almost every day. We’re talking about a system of control/taxation inherited from King Edward I, an English tyrant who devised “property taxation” not only as a way of fleecing the people, but a means of keeping peasants and royals under his thumb. Unable to actually “own” property, everyone in Edwardian England and today’s United States is a “tenant of the state.” That’s how it is in the Land of the free.

2. Almost every day in this country someone is being evicted from his or her own property for failure to pay property tax. Falling behind in your property tax often results in confiscation of your home, land, buildings. Every year you don’t pay means late fees, interest and penalties from the county. In the end, after a couple to a few years, your home is foreclosed and confiscated by the county for failure to pay your “rent” to the government. The county sells this property at public auction.

None of that money comes back to you and, in some cases, the poor bastard who just lost his or her home may be held liable for further expenses, court costs, etc. Property ownership is non-existent in the United States and I dare anybody to debate that fact.

3. It was Selina Gilmore, an 82year-old woman who had lived in her Cook County home for all of her adult life. She was born into this home which had been her parents’ for 20 years. By my account, that made it her “ancestral home.” She had fallen on hard times and exhausted her resources to maintain her home, feed herself, and raise her 2 grandchildren. Welfare agencies and church outreaches did what they could.

So, after three “deferrals” [that means she hadn’t paid property tax in over 3 years] she was evicted from her home. Sheriff’s deputies carried a crying, confused, and angry old woman from her home and began moving her possessions out of the house. Her whole life lay in piles on the front lawn. Selina collapsed in shock and was transferred to Holy Cross Hospital where, penniless and homeless, she died.

4. This sort of drama is acted out either in part or wholly across the country nearly every day. Law enforcement, ordered by the County, takes away the dreams of an American home, or any real estate of any kind. Business, farm, and any other kind of real estate has always remained property of the state. It’s been that way for hundreds of years. We learned how to do this emulating King Edward I, the man who made this system of “legalized land theft” a common practice and those English criminals and adventurers who settled here in the “New World” brought this heinous practice with them.

Is there a solution to this horrific practice? Sure, but it’s too simple and effective to ever pass muster in our corrupt state house and county commissions. Here we go: A one-time tax at purchase of say, 6%, would more than fulfill the needs of the county and state. Of course this would also require government officials to spend wisely and curb their corruption …. Yah! Right!
