Since 1956, Sudan’s path from independence to today’s civil war has been marred by coups, ethnic violence, and power struggles. Decades of dictatorship under al-Bashir, Darfur’s genocide, and military fragmentation culminated in the 2023 SAF-RSF conflict. The 2023 SAF-RSF conflict, rooted in al-Bashir’s legacy and gold-fueled power struggles, has sparked famine and mass displacement. We examine how outside forces—from the UAE to Russia—exploit Sudan’s chaos, turning a domestic crisis into a proxy war and the world’s worst humanitarian crises.
