Overview of the Book of Ruth

The book of Ruth tells a simple yet profound story set in one of Israel’s darkest periods, showing how God quietly works through ordinary people and everyday events. Ruth, a Moabite widow, chooses to follow and care for her Israelite mother-in-law Naomi, even embracing Yahweh, Naomi’s God. When they return to Bethlehem, God guides Ruth into the field of Boaz, a close relative who shows unusual kindness and later serves as a family “kinsman-redeemer.” Through Ruth’s loyalty, Boaz’s integrity, and God’s providential hand, tragedy gradually gives way to hope as Ruth and Boaz marry and have a son named Obed. This child becomes the grandfather of King David, which means Ruth, a Gentile, is woven into the family line that leads to Jesus. The whole book shows that God’s providence is at work even when life feels uncertain, that genuine love and faithfulness stand out in times of moral confusion, and that God can use unexpected people and small acts of obedience to accomplish His larger purposes.
