One Way Street is a 1950 American film noir crime film directed by Hugo Fregonese and starring James Mason, Märta Torén, and Dan Duryea. It is a story of a doctor who flees to Mexico with stolen money and a gangster's girlfriend, seeking a new, honest life, only for his past to catch up with him.
Synopsis
Dr. Frank Matson (James Mason), a physician working for mob boss John Wheeler (Dan Duryea), gets an opportunity to steal $200,000 from a recent heist. He tricks Wheeler into believing he has been poisoned and absconds with the money and Wheeler's girlfriend, Laura Thorsen (Märta Torén).
Their escape plane has engine trouble, forcing them to land in a remote Mexican village. There, with the help of a local priest (Basil Ruysdael), Matson rediscovers his medical calling and begins a new life, treating the poor villagers and falling in love with Laura. However, Wheeler is searching for them, and fate eventually leads Matson to return to Los Angeles to settle things, resulting in a tragic and fatalistic ending.
