The driver, agitated by road closures, weaves around state dump trucks, drives onto a grassy shoulder to bypass blockades, and leads police on a chase down the parade route. A motorcycle officer desperately tries to stop him, but he refuses, driving directly at families sitting on the curb. Miraculously, no one was physically injured, but the event left countless people traumatized.

In October 2024, Sidney Mecham was sentenced to 5 years in prison after pleading guilty to multiple felonies, including unlawful use of a weapon and reckless endangerment. In court, he called his actions a reckless "impulse" and apologized for the fear he caused.
