Hey everybody — it's Leaflit! In today’s video I’m reacting to the drama after The Streamer Awards 2025, where TheBurntPeanut — a streamer using a virtual avatar — won Best VTuber, ending the long-standing run of some established VTubers. The win has caused massive controversy: some fans insist he “isn’t a real VTuber” because his style and self-identification allegedly don’t align with traditional expectations.
I dive into all the arguments — what I think makes sense, what feels like unnecessary gatekeeping, and why I believe this whole drama says more about us as a community than about him.
Here’s what I break down:
What counts as a “VTuber”: A lot of critics argue that VTubing must follow certain unspoken standards (anime-style models, effortful art/rigging, “belonging” to the community). But at its base, VTubing is about using a virtual avatar instead of showing your face. TheBurntPeanut does that. If a streamer is using a virtual, avatar-based persona, isn’t that what the category describes?
Why people are upset — and where I think it’s over the top: Some feel that because TheBurntPeanut calls himself “PTuber” and has joked about not liking traditional VTubers, his win feels like a mockery. That’s valid as an emotional reaction — but does that justify treating a community award like a purity test? Many nominees have extremely different styles; diversity has always existed.
Awards should reflect popularity + reach, not gate-kept by nostalgia: The Streamer Awards is a fan-driven show, and winning means your community showed up for you. TheBurntPeanut clearly built a large audience with his avatar-based streams — so from a “popularity & engagement” standpoint, I can see why he won.
Why I support the chill-out / “let it be” approach: At the end of the day, this was just an awards show — not a moral code or manifesto. Everyone who was nominated put work in. Celebrating winners doesn’t have to mean destroying community spirit. As another well-known VTuber said, “all nominees deserved to be there.”
What this debate teaches us: The definition of “VTuber” is evolving. What matters is entertainment, not the style of avatar or the aesthetic. If part of the community wants to stick to old standards, I get it — but we shouldn’t erase newer forms or invalidate them just because they don’t match tradition.
At the end of the day — if you make people laugh, connect with fans, and use a virtual avatar to entertain — that’s VTubing in spirit. Awards are messy, and not every win feels “right” to everyone — but gatekeeping the definition doesn’t help.
Hit Like, Subscribe, and ring the bell. Let me know in the comments: What do you think makes a “real” VTuber? Do you believe avatar-style alone is enough, or does community/effort/style matter too?
