How to Make the Practice a Day Before a Game More Engaging for Your Players!

One of the most significant challenges I faced over the last ten years of my coaching career was creating a practice plan for the day before a game that kept all players engaged, energetic, and time-efficient. Organizing a practice that needed to be shorter in duration yet highly effective became more challenging with the “video game” era player. We never waited until the day before a game practice to implement our scouting report & what we needed to do defensively & offensively to compete; we implemented information throughout the week. However, I wanted the day before a game practice to reinforce what we’d taught during the week and leave our last practice on an enthusiastic note, ready for our next competition.

After a lot of trial & error, we came up with a game practice routine that met our needs & the players' needs. I highly recommend taking this day before a game practice routine & tweaking it to make it yours. It was perfect for us. We all left the locker room after those practice sessions feeling good about our chances for the following evening. In fact, we even used this practice routine on Saturday mornings when we had a Saturday evening game after a Friday game.
