Something remarkable—and deeply troubling—is happening in parts of Minneapolis and Dearborn.
In neighborhoods that are now majority Somali-American, the Democratic-run city governments and school districts are no longer asking (or requiring) new arrivals to assimilate into mainstream American culture. Instead, the institutions are the ones assimilating to Somali culture.Public-school lunches in Minneapolis–St. Paul have been switched to 100 % halal menus—even for non-Muslim students.
City and county offices in both Minneapolis and Dearborn now routinely print ballots, driver’s-license materials, and public-health notices in Somali first, English second (if at all) second.
Street signs, bus-stop signage, and even hospital directions in certain zip codes appear in Somali script with no English translation.
Several elected officials in these areas have begun inserting Somali phrases into official speeches and city-council meetings, while no equivalent effort is made to teach immigrants English as a condition of resettlement benefits.

In other words, the historic American pattern—“immigrants adapt to America”—has been flipped on its head. Taxpayer-funded institutions are adapting to the enclave instead of the enclave adapting to the country that welcomed it.This isn’t about food preferences or bilingual courtesy; it’s about who is expected to change. When government itself signals that learning English and embracing American norms is optional—while mandating that the host culture bend instead—we are no longer talking about immigration. We are talking about colonization in reverse.America has always been strengthened by immigrants who came to become Americans. What we are watching in these cities is the first time in U.S. history where large, government-backed enclaves are being allowed—and even encouraged—to remain permanent foreign nations inside our borders.That should alarm every American, regardless of party.
