Is God Mad at Me?

Do you feel like God is angry every time you fail? Like He’s disappointed with you… maybe even regretting that He adopted you? In this Footnotes devotion, we open 1 John 4:9–10 and unpack one of the most comforting (and most misunderstood) words in the Bible: propitiation.

Propitiation means that Jesus didn’t simply “calm God down” for a moment—He exhausted the wrath our sins deserved. At the cross, Christ took the full judgment we owed—past, present, and future—so that for everyone who is in Christ, there is no condemnation and no wrath left. You don’t live under God’s frown; you live under His fatherly smile.

We’ll also bring balance: propitiation doesn’t make sin “no big deal.” God still disciplines His children (Hebrews 12), but He disciplines as a loving Father, not as a condemning Judge.

📖 Scripture Focus: 1 John 4:9–10, Isaiah 53:5, Hebrews 12:5–6
