Text: Isaiah 9:1-7
Title: Light for the Darkness

Vital Verse(s): The people who walk in darkness will see a great light; Those who live in a dark land, the light will shine on them. Isaiah 9:2

Nuggets to Nibble: Darkness describes the initial scene prior to the creation. A state of nothingness exists until God breaths life and light. Isaiah characterizes the condition of Israel as darkness, bondage, and hopelessness. The people dwell in a perpetual state of life without the possibility of change. However, the prophet presents a lifeline of hope because light will shine in the darkness (Isaiah 9:2). Israel will “multiply,” increase their gladness,” and “rejoice” as with the harvest or dividing of the spoils (Isaiah 9:3). Thankfully, the covenant keeping Lord does not remain angry. Instead He extends compassion to the rebellious disobedient people because of His lovingkindness. The best expression of God’s love occurs through the light of Christ as the propitiation for the sins of the world (cf. Romans 3:25). Jesus Christ is the Messiah that will rule with a new government that have no end (Is 9:7). Isaiah 9:6 list the four royal titles of the Messiah. Each title possesses two aspects that are unique from traditional proper names. Likewise, each title explains a dimension of the Messiah's future righteous rule over a region that resides under the tyranny and brutal bondage of exile. Isaiah promises a future deliverance that includes physical and spiritual deliverance. The Messiah is the gift that continues to give because there is no end to the increase of His government (Is 9:7).
