The Bowen Centre building was constructed in 1897 as a nurses' home for the Austin Hospital for Incurables, a charitable institution founded by Elizabeth Austin in 1882.

It is one of a unique group of the earliest surviving purpose-built nurses' homes in metropolitan Melbourne. The building is of regional historic, social, architectural, and aesthetic significance as part of a complex that has retained several 19th-century buildings, a rarity among Melbourne hospitals.
