In the 18th century, Europe was gripped by real-life vampire panics. Villagers exhumed bodies, staking corpses that looked too well-preserved, convinced the dead were rising to drink the blood of the living. Even in America, the legend found its way into the New England Vampire Panic, with the infamous case of Mercy Brown.
