2 Samuel 19:1-23, There Is the King, Sitting in the Gate

The king’s loyalist army defeats the insurrectionists, but David is overcome with grief over his son’s death. Joab warns David that he risks another civil war unless he appears to the people and re-assumes his kingship authority. “Then the king arose and sat in the gate. And they told all the people, saying, ‘There is the king, sitting in the gate’” (2 Samuel 19:8 NKJV). The people rally around him, and David returns to Jerusalem.
We see parallels between these events in King David’s life and how people respond to Jesus today as well as the folly of looking to man instead of God for hope and deliverance. Only in Jesus do we have a sure and certain hope for all eternity. This Christmas season, Pastor Kevin exhorts believers to share the gospel, the greatest gift of all, while there is still time.
Maranatha!
