Today I’m reacting to a very tone-deaf post from PETA where they took an image of Silence Suzuka from Umamusume: Pretty Derby and edited her with a gory broken leg to make a point about real world horse racing. What they failed to understand is that the Umamusume franchise isn’t just cute artwork — it’s built around celebrating and supporting real racehorses and their legacies, and its community and developers actually do real-world good for horses.

In this reaction I clarify:

Why PETA’s post was widely rejected: Fans immediately criticized PETA for using a beloved character in a gruesome way that sensationalised a tragic horse injury — and violated Cygames’s official fan content rules designed to protect the horses’ reputations and developer relations.

Umamusume’s real-world impact: The franchise inspires support for real horses — from funds raised for retired racehorses to honoring legendary horses like Nice Nature. Cygames and the community have helped promote donations and awareness for horse care and welfare, something PETA should respect instead of exploiting.

Why PETA missed the mark: Instead of highlighting genuine concerns about welfare with thoughtful context, they chose shock value that trivialized the real tragedy of iconic horses — and rubbed fans the wrong way. Many pointed out that fans themselves have done more to help horses than a dramatic social-media stunt.

And let’s talk hypocrisy: PETA claims to fight for animal rights, yet its shelter practices and euthanasia rates have historically drawn criticism for killing animals at high rates rather than placing them in homes.

My take: I believe in protecting animals and real welfare issues — but you don’t fix a problem by misusing beloved content or ignoring the genuine support many fans and creators have shown for horses. Bad activism damages respect and undermines the cause.
