The note in the Furo led me like a sour scent to the new patrol route south of Honnoji Temple. The walls of the temple rose like a promise of sanctuary and, as I rounded the corner, I saw him—Takahashi Jiro—practicing his cruelty like a man polishing a virtue that stinks. He tested his blade on the bodies of those he called lesser, and each swing carved a fresh burn into my skin of memory. My hand tightened on Bloodshade, but I moved with the cold control of a hunter. One silent slide and the closest bodyguard breathed no more.

Takahashi was no weak man. His armor took steel like river stone takes rain. My first attempt to end him quietly failed; I cut deep enough to slow him, not to still him. He rolled, rose, and our blades met with a sound like thunder underfoot. His katana sang old songs of hatred and custom; mine answered in the low language of debt. The clash drew men—guards who thought they might save their master’s hands. I had not planned for numbers. I struck fast, found the small opening in his pride, and drove a wound that finished what his rituals started.

Before I fled, I rifled his pockets and found a crumpled scrap—fresh, hastily discarded. A woman had been there, perhaps the same I glimpsed running as I turned the corner. Was she a conspirator, a traitor, or a frightened pawn? The note might tell. For now, I vanished into the alleys and smoke, my body aching and my mind sharpening on the new clue. The twisted tree had one less rotten branch, but the root remained. I will find it and tear it out, one secret at a time.
