Metroid Prime 4: Beyond – Launch Trailer

There’s very few Nintendo games, if any, that’s spent as much time in the oven as Metroid Prime 4. Originally announced at E3 2017, just a few months after the Switch’s launch, over the course of eight years, it switched developers and was restarted completely from scratch, but has finally been released with its own launch trailer.

Reviews have been mixed with the current Metacritic score sitting in the low 80s. Not bad by any stretch, but definitely below where the original Prime entries on GameCube and Wii scored. There’s been controversy concerning the NPC characters Samus will be journeying and fighting alongside, with Metroid purists insisting that the series needs to stay true to its roots and remain steeped in isolation with Samus fighting and surviving on her own, while others seem okay with the series experimenting with new dynamics and who Samus interacts with.

A day one patch has already been released with some difficult balancing, amiibo functionality, and a few other tweaks. Other patches may be on the way, although the general consensus is that both the Switch and Switch 2 versions look good and run well.

Let’s hope Prime 4 sells well enough for Nintendo to decide to keep the series going. It might be a longshot given the rumors that it’s Nintendo’s most expensive game they’ve ever made, but there are also rumors that Metroid Prime 5 is already in development.
