The scrap from Takahashi Jiro’s body unfolded into a life I had not expected—the trembling hand of an old caregiver, a plea hidden between the scrawl. The note spoke of children who had once laughed in sunlit courtyards, of small mercies shown to neighbors, and of a stubborn goodness that might still live in two of the clan’s branches. For a moment, the image of those laughing children softened something in me. Could roots that deep be re-tended? Could two branches be spared from a tree so twisted?

Hope is a dangerous thing in my world; it makes the blade feel heavier. I found myself asking whether kindness born under cruelty deserves salvation. Have these children ever stood up for the people, or did they learn only to bow to their father’s iron will? The note suggests a possibility—two souls not entirely given to rot. If they truly wish to change, perhaps mercy will grow where we plant it. But mercy must be earned, not assumed.

First, the patriarch must fall. His life is the poison that waters the clan; remove him and the rest may wither or, perhaps, finally bloom true. I will find him, and when the moment comes, I will decide whether to cut the root clean or only lop the dead limbs. After that, I will watch the children closely. If they persist in cruelty, if they embrace the same code that made their home a place of fear, then my hand will not falter. If they show even a sliver of genuine change, then perhaps I can risk a different kind of justice—one that plants a new root rather than simply burns the stump.

The work ahead is moral and bloody. I walk it with both patience and a sharpened edge.
