Today we take for granted that everyone should learn to read. But historically, that wasn't normal—and it was Protestant missionaries who changed the world's thinking. The idea that everyone should read is a uniquely Protestant concept. They pioneered education in vernacular languages, developed classroom techniques like grouping by age and ability, and created texts for ordinary people.
