Nevada's Lost Hot Spring Geysers

Nevada once had a geyser that reportedly erupted to a height of 215 feet; if it were still active today, it would likely rank as the third-largest geyser in North America. This interesting claim sent me down a rabbit hole: I compared it to Steamboat Geyser and Old Faithful, and then I explored the more critical question: why did Nevada's geysers disappear?

My journey began with a 1956 Desert Magazine article that inspired me to visit the site myself. While in the field, I located the remnants of these geysers—the final steam vents—and took on-site temperature readings to demonstrate the heat that remains trapped underground.

Safety note: Geothermal areas can be unstable, with thin crusts and scalding steam. Please explore responsibly and respect the land.
