Separate but Equal was a legal doctrine within the United States Constitutional Law, implying/indicating racial segregation did not necessarily violate the 14th Amendment to the US Constitution, that protects equal protection. The ‘separate but equal’ basically acknowledges as long as facilities were equal to all races then it did not necessarily violate the doctrine. The actual phrase coded was “Equal but Separate”.
