Matthew 24 The Great Tribulation

The "Great Tribulation" described by Jesus in Matthew 24:21 and paralleled in Revelation primarily refers to the unprecedented suffering experienced by the Jewish people during the Roman siege and destruction of Jerusalem in AD 70. This catastrophic event, marked by famine, internal strife, mass slaughter, and the temple's total destruction, fulfilled Jesus' prophecy that "no flesh would survive" in Judea unless those days were shortened (Matthew 24:22), as over a million Jews perished according to contemporary historian Josephus. The tribulation was limited to "those days" leading up to AD 70, serving as divine judgment on unbelieving Israel for rejecting the Messiah, while believing Jews who heeded Jesus' warning fled to safety. After AD 70, the old covenant system ended, the gospel spread freely to the Gentiles, and the prophesied tribulation reached its climax and conclusion in that generation, just as Jesus declared it would occur before "this generation passes away" (Matthew 24:34).
