Hey everyone — it’s Leaflit. In today’s video I react to Warren Smith’s video “New Footage EXPOSES Incompetent Police Response to Bondi Beach Shooting” and the broader context of the deadly terrorist attack on a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia. This was a horrifying event where 15 people were killed and many more were injured, in what authorities have called an antisemitic terrorist attack.

While there were undeniably moments of bravery, including officers engaging the attackers and even civilians stepping in to help, there’s growing criticism that the defense and public safety systems failed before, during, and after this massacre — including how long it took to stop the attackers and whether adequate security was in place at a well-publicized event.

Here’s what I break down in this reaction:

Why people are upset: New footage and reporting suggest it took too long for authorities to stop the gunmen — meaning the attackers had precious minutes to keep firing on innocent people before they were finally engaged.

Security failures before the attack: Many have pointed out there were minimal police or protective measures at an event that should have been anticipated as a possible target, especially given the rise in antisemitic incidents and threats in previous months. Community members directly questioned the lack of protective presence.

Delayed or unprepared response: Even though authorities later defended the response and praised officers’ bravery under fire, critics — including politicians and experts — have raised serious questions about whether a stronger preventive and preparedness strategy could have saved lives.

What this says about public safety in Australia: This attack — one of Australia’s deadliest in decades — highlights troubling gaps: from threat assessment and intelligence to on-the-ground readiness in crowded public spaces. The fact that heavily armed attackers could fire for a prolonged time before being stopped points to deeper systemic problems that must be acknowledged.

My take: We cannot ignore the heroism of individuals who did their best, but we can and should question whether authorities did enough before the attack, whether security planning reflected known risks, and why this tragedy unfolded as slowly as it did. Real accountability means asking hard questions, not just praising bravery after the fact.
