CS #313. Pendulum is a 1969 George Peppard)

American neo-noir crime thriller film directed by George Schaefer and starring George Peppard, Jean Seberg, and Richard Kiley. The plot centers on a Washington D.C. police captain who becomes the prime suspect in his wife's murder.
Plot Summary
Police Captain Frank Matthews (George Peppard), a hard-nosed cop, has just captured a psychotic rapist and murderer named Paul Sanderson (Robert F. Lyons). However, Sanderson's conviction is overturned on a technicality related to the Miranda rights, and he is released.
Shortly after, Matthews' unfaithful wife, Adele (Jean Seberg), and her lover are found murdered. Circumstantial evidence points to Matthews, and his own colleagues quickly pre-judge him as guilty. Faced with mounting evidence and a potential death penalty, Matthews hires the same civil libertarian lawyer who freed Sanderson, Woodrow Wilson King (Richard Kiley), to defend him. When it becomes clear he is presumed guilty by all, Matthews escapes custody to find the real killer himself, believing the recently freed Sanderson is responsible for framing him.
