Animated historical documentary series on the early modern history and history of the United States of America, continues with a video on the reasons, prelude and beginning of the American Civil War, as we cover the events from the battle of Fort Sumter to the battle of Chancellorsville. Previously, we have covered the American Revolution - the War of American Independence. This episode is Part 1 of a long-form American Civil War documentary series, covering the origins of the war and its opening military campaigns, from the antebellum period to the Battle of Chancellorsville. Rather than repeating myths or surface-level explanations, the video focuses on the core causes of the conflict—slavery, the Southern plantation economy, and the fear of political and social collapse that drove secession. Using primary sources such as state secession declarations, the Confederate Constitution, and speeches like Alexander H. Stephens’ Cornerstone Speech, the episode establishes that slavery was not incidental, but the central reason the Southern states chose war. It also dismantles the Lost Cause myth, explaining how post-war revisionism obscured these realities. The narrative then follows the escalating political crisis of the 19th century—King Cotton, westward expansion, the Missouri Compromise, Bleeding Kansas, the Dred Scott decision, and John Brown’s Raid—before moving into the outbreak of open conflict. The military portion of the episode covers the secession crisis, the bombardment of Fort Sumter, and the first campaigns that proved the war would not be short or easy. Key early battles and operations examined include First Bull Run (Manassas), the fighting in the Border States, Wilson’s Creek, Fort Henry, Fort Donelson, and the widening war in Kentucky and Missouri. The episode concludes with the Union and Confederate armies learning hard lessons through costly engagements, setting the stage for later clashes such as Shiloh, Antietam, Fredericksburg, and ultimately Chancellorsville.
