The Land Promises To Israel

The Old Testament records God's promise of land to Abraham and his descendants as an everlasting possession (Genesis 17:8), which was initially fulfilled when Israel entered and possessed Canaan under Joshua, as Scripture explicitly states that the Lord gave them all the land He swore to their fathers and not one promise failed (Joshua 21:43-45). However, this earthly inheritance served as a type and shadow pointing forward to a greater reality, much like the patriarchs themselves sought a heavenly country and city whose builder is God (Hebrews 11:9-10, 13-16). In the New Covenant inaugurated by Christ, the old system of shadows, including the physical land as central to God's promises, becomes obsolete (Hebrews 8:13), with believers now inheriting eternal rest and a better homeland in the heavenly Jerusalem through Jesus, the mediator of a superior covenant (Hebrews 4:8-11; 8:6-7). Thus, the land promises are no longer binding as literal, national obligations under the New Covenant, having found their ultimate fulfillment and transformation in Christ and the spiritual inheritance of all God's people.
