THE BOCC PRESENTS “Teaching Sound Doctrine: A Responsibility to Edify”
“Why every teaching must build up the body — not puff up, confuse, or destroy.”
This sermon explores the holy responsibility of teaching the doctrine of the Most High God and how every lesson, sermon, and correction must be rooted in Scripture — and aimed at edifying the church, not glorifying the teacher.
God does not call us to impress people with knowledge.
He calls us to build up His people in love, truth, and humility.
1. The Character of a True Teacher (2 Timothy 2:24–26)
Paul reminds us that the servant of the Lord must be:
Gentle

Patient

Able to teach

Avoiding quarrels
Teaching should lead people to repentance and freedom — not arguments and pride.
2. Knowledge Without Love Is Dangerous (1 Corinthians 8:1)
Paul warns:
“Knowledge puffeth up, but charity edifieth.”
Doctrine that makes us arrogant is not of God.
True teaching grows humility, obedience, and unity.
3. Desire Gifts — But Especially Teaching That Builds (1 Corinthians 14:5)
Paul emphasizes the importance of teaching clearly so the church can:
Understand
Mature
Be strengthened in faith
Teaching must serve the body — not the ego of the teacher.
4. Everything Must Edify (1 Corinthians 14:26)
Whatever is shared — doctrine, prophecy, teaching, revelation — must be done:
“unto edifying.”
If it tears down, confuses, shames, or divides — it is not being done God’s way.
5. Not Everything Permissible Is Helpful (1 Corinthians 10:23)
Even if something is technically “allowable,” it may not build up.
Teachers must ask:
✔️ Does this help believers grow?
✔️ Does it strengthen faith?
✔️ Does it lead people closer to Christ?
Sound doctrine always produces spiritual health — not confusion, pride, or strife.
“Teaching is not about proving we’re right — it’s about building God’s people the right way.”
