Too Close for Comfort: Ditch Line Encounter

It was a warm December day in North Carolina when our family and friends got together for one more late-season hunt. The dogs were applying pressure, keeping the deer on their feet and moving through the thick stuff.

I set up along a ditch line — and before I knew it, a deer came right up beside me in the bushes. Close enough to hear him breathing and moving through the briars. You’ll hear me on the radio talking with the crew about the deer, the dogs, and where everyone is positioned.

But here’s the important part:
I couldn’t properly identify my target in the brush…
So no shots fired.

That’s real hunting.
Right decision, every time, no matter how close or exciting the moment gets.

This is hound hunting in North Carolina: excitement, adrenaline, family, dogs working their hearts out — and ethics guiding every decision.

Honor in the chase. Respect in the harvest.
