The founding of the State of Israel in 1948 followed the UN Partition Plan, which proposed dividing British Mandate Palestine into Jewish and Arab states; Jewish leaders accepted it, while Palestinian Arabs and surrounding Arab countries rejected it, leading to immediate civil war. During the 1947–1948 civil conflict and the subsequent war after Israel's declaration of independence, Zionist military forces—primarily the Haganah, along with paramilitary groups Irgun and Lehi (widely labeled as terrorist organizations by the British and others)—carried out operations that included direct expulsions, village destruction, and massacres, most notably at Deir Yassin. These actions, guided in part by Plan Dalet and amplified by psychological warfare, triggered widespread panic and flight among Palestinian civilians, resulting in the displacement of approximately 700,000–750,000 Palestinians in what is known as the Nakba.
