On December 26, Nick Shirley, a 23-year-old YouTuber with more than 1.1 million subscribers, published a video documenting what he described as largely empty day care facilities in Minneapolis, Minnesota, raising questions about potential misuse of public funds.

The video emerged as federal authorities had already increased FBI presence in Minnesota amid ongoing investigations. In recent remarks, Assistant U.S. Attorney Joe Thompson cautioned that fraud tied to state-administered federal programs could exceed $9 billion dating back to 2018. Previous assessments have estimated confirmed losses at approximately $1 billion.
