Hey everyone — it’s Leaflit! In today’s video I’m talking about how outrageously expensive eating out and ordering takeout has become compared to just a few years ago, and why it really does matter — even if some people try to brush it off like it’s no big deal.

A lot of folks have noticed that a simple restaurant meal or even fast food just doesn’t feel affordable anymore. In major cities like San Francisco, Seattle, Los Angeles and New York, the average price for a fast-food combo can easily exceed $13-$14 per meal — and that’s fast food we’re talking about, not fine dining.

Meanwhile, bigger studies show that people are cutting back on dining out altogether because prices have jumped so much that even once-regular meals feel like a luxury. In the UK for example, 38 % of diners say they’re eating out less than a year ago because of price increases, and many are choosing cheaper restaurants or cooking at home instead.

The truth is — restaurant and takeout prices have been rising faster than grocery prices and general inflation, forcing consumers to think twice before spending on meals away from home.

Here’s what I’m critical of in this video:

People who say “it’s not a big deal” — If you’re struggling to justify spending $12-$15+ on food that used to cost half that, yes it’s a big deal. Especially for young people, families, and anyone living on a tight budget. Many Americans now see fast food as a luxury, not a budget option.

The government (past and present) doing almost nothing to help real cost-of-living pain. Prices didn’t just jump overnight — inflation, labor costs, supply chain issues, and policy choices all play a role. Yet policymakers talk about abstract inflation metrics while people’s wallets feel the pressure at checkout.

Wages haven’t kept up with rising costs. Restaurant prices have gone up because of higher costs for ingredients, rent, labor and energy — and many consumers are being squeezed twice: pay more for meals and get less out of their income.

Eating out used to be an occasional treat, but now it’s something you budget for anxiously. That’s not just personal perception — that’s what the data and prices show. If you feel the pinch every time you grab takeout or dine out, this video is for you.
