In post-war London, a man known as Biscuit searches for a lost love he knows only as "Sea Wife". His quest triggers a flashback to 1942.

Their ship, evacuating Singapore, is sunk by a Japanese submarine. Four survivors find themselves together on a small life raft: Biscuit (Richard Burton), a mysterious woman (Joan Collins), a racist businessman nicknamed Bulldog, and the ship's Black purser, called Number Four. Only Number Four knows the woman's secret: she is Sister Therese, a nun who has discarded her habit.

Drifting to a deserted island, Biscuit falls passionately in love with "Sea Wife." Torn by her feelings but bound by her vows, she hides her identity from him. Tensions explode when Bulldog's bigotry leads to a deadly act of betrayal against Number Four.
