4 Very Scary TRUE Remote Lighthouse Horror Stories
00:00 "Little Ross":
In August 1960, a father and son travel by small boat to Little Ross Island for what they expect to be a quiet picnic near the lighthouse. Instead, they find the island eerily deserted. The lighthouse keepers—usually quick to greet visitors—are nowhere to be seen. Doors stand unlocked, rooms are tidy, and a telephone rings unanswered. Inside the principal keeper’s house, they discover Hugh Clark dead in his bed, shot while he slept. His assistant, Robert Dickson, is missing. As police investigate the isolated island, they find the murder weapon and a brief note revealing Dickson’s mental collapse under the strain of extreme isolation. Dickson is later arrested in England and confesses. He is sentenced to life imprisonment after an initial death sentence and eventually takes his own life in prison. The lighthouse is later automated, ending the era of keepers on Little Ross.
06:31 "The Unlit North":
In a small lakeside town where the lighthouse is trusted with lives, the north light on Grand Island goes dark and stays that way. When a group of townsmen row out to investigate, they find the island abandoned but not untouched—supplies left to rot, a half-written letter warning of violence, and blood-stained tools hidden in the boathouse and woods. As they search deeper, the truth begins to surface: a brutal fight between the two lighthouse keepers, a body buried near the shore, and evidence that one man tried to silence the other forever. But the island holds another danger. A reclusive game keeper, long at odds with the men of the lighthouse, lurks in the trees, watching. The townsmen barely escape with their lives. In the aftermath, one keeper is found dead, the other washed ashore miles away, and the true sequence of events is never fully known. The light returns to Grand Island—but the mystery of what really happened there remains, haunting the lake and those who went looking for answers.
13:09 "The Watch":
A man takes work as a lighthouse keeper on a desolate rock far off the Welsh coast, sharing the isolated tower with an older, domineering partner named Tom. From the beginning, the two men clash, their tempers sharpened by the cramped space, harsh routine, and endless sea. Though they manage their duties and keep the light burning, tension simmers beneath every exchange. The balance shatters when Tom slips on the lighthouse stairs and is badly injured. Despite the narrator’s efforts to care for him, Tom dies from his wounds, leaving the narrator alone on the rock with the body. Fearing blame and punishment due to their known quarrels, the narrator refuses to commit Tom to the sea as regulations demand. Instead, he keeps the corpse inside the lighthouse, hoping to prove Tom’s death was an accident. As days stretch into weeks, isolation, decay, and guilt erode the narrator’s sanity. The stench of the body, the relentless wind and waves, and the unchanging routine drive him into hallucinations and obsessive behavior. He builds a wooden box to contain the body, only for the sea to tear it open, leaving Tom’s arm dangling and swaying like a grotesque signal to passing ships.
20:50 "No Flag Flying":
Joseph Moore arrives on the remote island of Eilean Mòr to relieve three experienced lighthouse keepers, only to find the station eerily abandoned. A meal sits untouched, a chair lies overturned, and one man’s oilskins are missing. Though the lamp is ready to be lit, the men themselves have vanished without a trace. A search of the island reveals violent damage at the west landing—twisted iron, displaced stone, and signs of an immense wave reaching far above the sea. Forced to remain behind and tend the light, Moore endures nights of isolation, strange sounds, and the crushing presence of absence as the sea continues to batter the rock. Official investigation concludes that a massive storm wave swept the keepers away while they attempted to secure equipment, but certainty offers little comfort. The lighthouse is eventually abandoned, leaving behind unanswered questions and a lasting sense of unease—an enduring reminder of how quickly the sea can claim even the most seasoned men.
