Tears in Heaven is a song written by English guitarist, singer, and songwriter Eric Clapton and American songwriter Will Jennings, released on the soundtrack for the film Rush in 1991.
The song was inspired by the tragic death of Clapton's four-year-old son, Conor, who fell from the 53rd-floor window of a New York City apartment on March 20, 1991.
Clapton, who was preparing to pick up Conor for a planned father-son lunch, described the moment he learned of his son's death as causing him to "go cold" and "shut down right away".
The song emerged from Clapton's grief during a period of isolation and reflection, with lyrics expressing the emotional pain of loss and the longing to reconnect with his son in the afterlife.
