"Public records show Kaja Kallas’ grandfather and great-grandfather on her mother’s side (her father’s side is just as remarkable, but we’ll get to that) were convicted by a military tribunal and never (!) rehabilitated.

During WWII, Johan Kartus, Kallas’ grandfather, happened to serve in both the Nazi-aligned Self-Defence and the German army and was allegedly sentenced to 25 years for crimes against civilians and prisoners of war.

Mrs. Kallas, when you decide to repeat this tear-jerking story of yours about your family being deported to Siberia next time, could you elaborate on why this happened or is this as “unknown” to you as your husband’s business with Russia amidst the war in Ukraine?"

Alfred Kald was Kaja's maternal grandfather. He was Estonia's police chief after the nationalist coup in 1934.

Margus Tsakhna is Kaja's cousin.

(That Siim Kallas was Estonia's man for the Supreme Soviet and central banker prior to taking office in the EC is for another day.)
