- HISTORY -
Tecmo Super Bowl III: Final Edition is a 1995 American football video game develope`d and published by Tecmo for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) and the Sega Genesis.
The subtitle "Final Edition" signifies it was intended to be the last football game Tecmo would release for 16-bit systems.
The game features full NFL and NFLPA licenses, including all 30 NFL teams from the 1994 season, with updated rosters, player stats, team logos, and uniforms.
It also includes the two new expansion teams introduced in 1995: the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Carolina Panthers.
The game offers a range of gameplay features that enhance realism compared to earlier entries in the series. It includes a customizable playbook with eight passing plays and eight running plays per team, allowing players to switch plays mid-game.
Additional strategic elements include two-point conversion attempts, fake extra points, and the ability to call audibles.
The in-game presentation mimics a "TV style" broadcast, with grayscale player portraits and statistics appearing after significant plays such as touchdowns, interceptions, or sacks.
The game also features dynamic season mode with detailed statistics, league leaders, record-breaking events, and real-life-style injuries that affect player availability.
Customization options are extensive, including the Super Star Editor for creating custom players using a point system, free agency, and player trades during a pre-season window.
The game supports various modes such as exhibition games, full NFL seasons, playoffs, and Pro Bowl matches.
It also includes new camera angles, improved artificial intelligence for computer-controlled teams, and cinematic cutscenes for key plays.
The game features weather conditions like fair, rain, and snow, which can influence gameplay.
Reception was mixed. The Super NES version received praise for its two-player mode, graphics, and Super Star Editor, though critics noted a limited field view that caused deep receivers to run off-screen.
A reviewer from Next Generation gave it one out of five stars, criticizing outdated graphics, perspective, and a small playbook.
The Genesis version was criticized for control issues, including the inability to switch to the closest player after a snap, lack of spin or stiff-arm moves, and AI control during passing plays, though it was considered accessible.
The game remains a classic in the sports genre, celebrated for its strategic depth and nostalgic appeal.
It is available for online play through browser-based emulators such as OldGameShelf.com and RetroGames.cc.
Physical copies can be found on platforms like Amazon and GameStop, with pre-owned versions available for around $19.99.
