The brazen operation to capture despot Nicolas Maduro was, undeniably, one of the most daring raids in US military history. In the dead of night, more than 150 warplanes snuck across the Caribbean into Venezuela.

Armed to the teeth, they pummeled the country's Russian-made defenses and plunged the South American country's capital, Caracas, into darkness. Within two-and-a-half hours of getting the order from President Donald Trump, elite troops had infiltrated Maduro's home.

Captured, commandos whisked him and his wife to the US, where the Trump administration planned to put the 'narco-terrorist' on trial for drugs and weapons charges.

This is how the mission unfolded…
Step 1: Reconnaissance
Last August, CIA operatives were sent to Caracas on a secret reconnaissance mission. In hope of grabbing Maduro without any unwanted hiccups, spies were tasked with carefully studying his movements and behavior.
Spooks also had an asset within Maduro’s circle, feeding their intel directly to the military so that an audacious plan to forcibly remove him could be pulled together.
With the US having built up an armada in the Caribbean because of rising tensions between the two nations, Maduro knew the imminent danger he faced. In an effort to evade capture, the 63-year-old began rotating between half a dozen locations.

This included Fort Tiuna – described by Trump as a ‘fortress’.
Elite US troops, including the Army's Delta Force, rehearsed their daring plan using a life-size replica of Maduro’s safe house, just as Seal Team Six did before their nighttime mission to kill Osama Bin Laden. Before being expelled in 2001 when Hugo Chavez came to power, the US military mission had occupied the same sprawling facility for more than 50 years.

Circling above the city, at up to 50,000ft, on the night of the raid was a stealth reconnaissance drone. The RQ-170 Sentinel, launched from the US Naval Station Roosevelt Roads in Puerto Rico, likely confirmed that Maduro had gone to sleep in Fort Tiuna.
