In this video I’m reacting to Caprisanh’s video “Why Lightsaber Duels Suck Now” — where he breaks down how the quality, choreography, and storytelling impact of lightsaber fights in the newer Star Wars projects under Disney just aren’t holding a candle to what we had before.

For many fans, lightsaber duels are the heart and soul of Star Wars — from the emotional, character-driven fights of the Original Trilogy to the fast-paced, visually thrilling choreography of the Prequels like Obi-Wan vs. Darth Maul, which some fans still count among the best duels in cinema history.

But in the Disney era — especially in the sequel trilogy and some series — lightsaber duels have felt slower, less dynamic, or underwhelming in comparison. A lot of fans say newer fights sometimes lack coherent choreography, logic in how characters fight, or the sense of real threat and narrative weight that earlier duels had.

Some specific complaints include:
Slower, less fluid choreography that doesn’t feel like lightsabers — or like people using energy swords with meaning.

Scenes where fighters seem to swing without real purpose, or props that feel awkward and heavy instead of weightless and precise.

Missed opportunities where exciting duels could’ve had real stakes or iconic moments but ended up flat or unevenly executed.

Now, it doesn’t mean every Disney era duel is bad, and there are elements fans still enjoy, but overall it feels like something that once was epic, character-defining, and cinematic has been reduced to background action or style over substance. That’s frustrating when you love a franchise because of what made it special in the first place.

I’m critical of Disney and how they’ve treated Star Wars over recent years — especially when it comes to choreography, narrative focus, and honoring the legacy of lightsaber duels. But I’m also supportive of fans and creators who remember what made those epic lightsaber moments great, and push for better storytelling and more meaningful combat sequences going forward.
