I think the Petrodollar model is the old paradigm. Short history of coming off the gold standard and arriving at the Petrodollar-
During WWI, Europe stopped letting people redeem the currency for Gold, whether they were citizens of the country in question or internationals. This destroyed international gold exchange.
After WWI, the AMERICAN Gold Standard remained in place but American gold was embargoed (not allowed to leave the country) until 1919, meaning Americans and *maybe* foreign nationals (there were a lot fewer of them then) could convert their paper to gold but not take it out of the country.
When the embargo was lifted there were huge gold outflows and the practice of "sterilizing" gold inflows, or vaulting them instead of letting the gold circulate (through commercial banks), began.
This increased through the mid-1920's from what I gather.
1929 was the crash and it would have been routine but the Fed exacerbated it by tightening the money in circulation instead of increasing the money supply. There was a short recovery after FDR stole everyone's gold (who complied), then they started vaulting all of the gold inflows and the Depression resumed until WW2.
After WW2 we went on the Breton Woods agreement, which meant the US gold could be converted but ONLY by foreign govs & central banks & NOT by US citizens or any other individuals. USG redeemable by gov'ts & central banks for $35 per oz, and all other currencies value pegged to USD. Then they killed Kennedy and LBJ started the Great Society program and a lot more money had to be printed, which is actual inflation but the value was artificially held at $35/Gold oz for conversion, and all the other currencies held to this artificially overvalued dollar and this pissed off Europe. France & others knew we didn't have the gold to cover the notes circulating and began making huge redemptions of USD for Gold, and the money wasn't there to redeem it. THAT's why Nixon took us off the Gold and ended Bretton Woods, which wasn't a real gold standard anyway because US citizens could NOT redeem their paper.
At the same time, Kissinger set up the oil market to trade in USD only, so every country had to convert to USD to buy oil so this created great demand for USD, and I think this is part of the rationale behind shutting down our factories and moving to an import-based economy: that puts more dollars in circulation, helps the oil move and the global economy.
So Nixon really had no choice, he had to make that pivot, which was lucrative for the US as a whole, but then there was this gangsterism of making everybody trade oil on the dollar and print fiat currency and murdering any leaders who tried to buck the trend.
Trump HATING nonreciprocal/non-balanced trade/trade deficits and rebuilding American manufacturing, means he doesn't want the import economy and probably will end the Petrodollar. It seems in an absolute sense they already did, with BRICS now trading oil in their own currencies, and couping Maduro will not change that.
