Myofascial release/self massage was extremely important in me overcoming what is supposed to be chronic debilitating knee pain. Same story for my clients that incur joint issues and tendinitis. Applying a force perpendicular to the muscle on the muscle increases muscle tension so much that golgi tendons activate and tell the muscle to relax. This releases dysfunctional tightness of muscles and allows them to behave properly. This effect alleviates joint pain since now the muscle are not pulling unevenly on joints.

If you try this, start gently with a foam roll, hand roller, or massage ball and stay still on each area you massage. Don't move. Breath deeply and relax to rewire the muscle's neurology. Let your muscle sink into whatever you are massaging it with. You can work up to a pin and stretch technique.
